Northern self-drive
Search for desert adapted elephants, see the Twyfelfontein rock engravings, view the animals in Etosha and admire the conservation work at Okonjima. When combined with the Southern self-drive this creates the fantastic Highlights of Namibia.
Day 1-3
Today you will arrive at either Camp Kipwe (standard itinerary) or Mowani Mountain Camp (superior itinerary) where you will stay for 3 nights. The rest of the day is at leisure. Both lodges are situated within the Twyfelfontein Conservancy and conveniently close to Twyfelfontein, the Burnt Mountain and the Organ Pipes. Both boast magnificent desert scenery, a unique variety of desert flora and fauna and fascinating geological formations.
Day 4-7
After breakfast travel through Khorixas and then Outjo and then even further north. Here you will find Ongava Game Reserve where you will spend 2 nights. Ongava Private Game Reserve is situated at the Okaukuejo/Ombika Gate of the Etosha National Park. Walking trails and game drives are offered in the 75 000 hectare reserve and game viewing excursions into Etosha National Park can be arranged on request.
After Ongava you will spend an amazing day driving through Etosha National Park (Ongava will provide a packed lunch - own expense) and pass though the Von Lindequist Gate where you will find your lodge just outside the park. Stay at the Mushara Collection lodges for 2 nights. Activities at the lodges include nature walks and game drives into the park.
Day 8-9
After breakfast you will be on the road again, traveling south. You will pass through Tsumeb and then Otjiwarongo. Just outside Otjiwarongo you will find Okonjima Lodge where you will spend 2 nights. Okonjima is home to the AfriCat Foundation, which aims to conserve and protect threatened wild cat species such as cheetah and leopard. Guests have the opportunity to see the programme at work and learn more about these beautiful animals.
Day 10
Head back to Windhoek today and drop your car, before continuing your journey.
This itinerary is based upon commencement from Swakopmund. If starting in Windhoek it is advisable to have an overnight stop between Windhoek and Twyfelfontein. Other options include combining this itinerary with either of the southern self-drive itineraries; extending your stay in the Damaraland region or
at Okonjima to see more of this worthwhile project.
