 MAFIA ISLAND AND FANJOVE
  DIVERS PARADISE
Mafia Island
A short flight flight from Dar es Salaam or the Selous Game Reserve and just 25km off the mainland, Mafia Island is the largest of a small archipelago of islands and atolls, a divers paradise and one of the foremost destinations in the world to see the planets largest fish, the Whale Shark. The friendly islanders are mainly fishermen or farmers growing coconut, paw-paw,
rice and cassava; the atmosphere is relaxed and laid-back.
The 2 lodges we feature on Mafia are
Pole Pole Bungalows has seven comfortable bungalows, set amongst
the coconut palms overlooking Chole Bay. Italian owned, this is refelected in the cuisine, with traditional Swahili dinners served once a week.
The resort has a pleasant swimming pool and deck. Complimentary dhow day-trips are offered.
Chole Mjini Lodge on tiny Chole Island has unusual tree-houses on stilts in baobab trees, and is a great place to experience village life, and also offers great diving, snorkelling and dhow trips. In their own words - ‘as the first treehouses hove into view, the last vestiges of the 21st century recede:
no roads, no cars, no electricity’.
FANJOVE ISLAND > TANZANIA
Fanjove Private Island
Rustic - Private Island
There are six A-Frame wood and thatch Bandas (Swahili for 'hut'), each with an open-air ensuite bathroom, which are stretched along the main beach to guarantee privacy. Each has a view of the ocean and an upstairs balcony/lounge. All have been designed with the environment in mind, specifically to have the lowest impact on the island and are solar- powered. Fanjove Island is a tropical paradise, white sandy beaches and plenty of wildlife. Home to nesting turtles (hatching April - July) and an 11km coral reef with a large array of marine life. Activities include diving; snorkelling; dolphin watching - spend a couple of hours on the boat to try and see either Spinner Dolphins or Bottlenose Dolphins; bird watching - from November to March the island is home to many migratory birds; kayak safaris; dhow sailing; fishing; and the Fanjove Nature Trail.
The flight arrives to neighbouring Songo Songo Island, from where it is around 40 minutes by boat to Fanjove.
Fanjove is a genuinely rustic eco-lodge, in a remote and poor part of Africa. If this sounds like your thing, then we heartily recommend it. If it doesn't, then we really, really don't!
