ZAMBIA
BE AWESTRUCK
Zambia
‘The entire Zambezi leaps wildly into a black two kilometre wide abyss.
The falls hiss and roar as if possessed, they rumble and crash like thunder.
Vast clouds spew and billow out from the seething cauldron of its dark impenetrable depths.
Jumbo Williams, Zambezi, River of Africa. 1988
Zambia is one of the most exciting safari destinations in Africa, with an emphasis on walking safaris. The South Luangwa National Park is the hub for walking safaris, famous for its Ox Bow lagoons and high concentration of animal and bird species. The other major parks are the beautiful Lower Zambezi National Park, the very large and wild Kafue National Park and the remote North Luangwa National Park.
And then of course there is the Victoria Falls, described by the local tribesman as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ - ‘the Smoke that Thunders’, in reference to the colossal columns of spray. Some of the lodges and activities in South Luangwa are seasonal,
but Zambia is a good year round safari destination. A popular combination
is with Lake Malawi, often used for ‘R&R’ after a safari.
