SOUTH AFRICA
GREAT TRAIN ADVENTURES > SOUTH AFRICA
Shongololo Express
Elegant
Now part of the Rovos Rail stable, Shongololo Express can be best described as a 'touring train', underwritten by the tradition and quality of Rovos Rail. The three journeys of 12 to 15 days traverse South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
Generally, the train travels at night, arriving each day at a new destination and after breakfast you will take guided day trips. When on board the train you can relax in the air-conditioned bar and restaurant. The well appointed dining cars set the classic scene
for dinner on the move, accompanied by a selection of fine South African wines. There is also a bar carriage, smoking lounge and an observation car with an open air balcony situated at the rear of the train.
There are two categories of accommodation, Emerald Suites and Gold Suites, each with ample storage space and cupboards.
Emerald Suites are approximately 10sq metres, larger than most luxury train compartments around the world; they have a small sitting area. The smaller Gold Suites are 7 sq metres (still a good size). Both categories have an en-suite bathroom with shower, WC and wash-hand basis.
The 15-day Good Hope journey is the classic 'Highlights of South Africa' trip, running from Pretoria to Cape Town (or vice versa).
Highlights include Pretoria and a Soweto tour; the Panorama Route and a Kruger National Park safari; eSwatini (formerly Swaziland) ; Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park drives; St Lucia Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site; Durban & the Battlefields; Bloemfontein & Kimberly, often overlooked; Graaff Reinet in the Eastern Cape; the Klein Karoo, Cango Caves and
an ostrich farm visit; Knysna on the heart of the Garden Route; Hermanus; and finally the Mother City of Cape Town.
The two 12 day tours are: The Southern Cross, running from Pretoria to Victoria Falls via Kruger National Park, Mozambique, Great Zimbabwe and Hwange National Park; and the Dune Express from Pretoria to Walvis Bay in Namibia via Kimberley, Fish River Canyon, Sossusvlei, Windhoek and Etosha National Park.
Both journeys are also available in reverse.
