KwaZulu Natal Self Drive
12 nights. Departs from the UK every day.
Blessed by a sunny year-round climate KwaZulu-Natal, known as the Kingdom of the Zulu, offers travellers diverse attractions. Landscapes range from mountains and forests to wetlands and long beaches, while activities include deep-sea diving, white-water rafting, hiking, historical tours, horse riding,
trout fishing, safari, golf and much more.
Zulu, Indian and European influences have created a cultural mosaic that is fascinating and accessible. This itinerary is particularly popular with families. This is our most popular itinerary in KwaZulu Natal but we can also tailor-make a route to suit your personal taste.
 Day 1
South African Airways overnight flight from Heathrow to Johannesburg.
Day 2-4
As you leave the hustle and bustle of the suburbs of Johannesburg, you will be struck by the sense of space and contrasts of the spectacular scenery as you make the 31⁄2 hour journey to the Drakensberg region, situated approximately halfway between Johannesburg and Durban. Settle into the laid back rhythm of the ‘Berg’ where you will spend the next 3 nights. Activities available in the area include hiking, climbing, golf, tennis, horse riding, fly fishing, mountain biking and township and cultural tours.
Day 05-07
After a hearty breakfast and one last look at the view, head east for 3 hours (approximately) and you will arrive in the Battlefields area of KwaZulu Natal, just in time for lunch. Enjoy a slice of history during your 3-night stay in this region, with optional tours to the battlefields of Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana, sites of some of the most dramatic events in British military history that occurred during the Anglo-Zulu War of the 19th century. Alternatively stop on the way at Spionkop, the scene of another bloody conflict, this time from the Anglo-Boer War.
Day 08-10
A further 3 hour drive will take you towards the oldest game reserve in Africa, Hluhluwe iMfolozi, famous for saving the White Rhino from extinction and also home to the rest of the ‘Big 5’. You will also be on the doorstep of Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site and Africa’s largest marine estuary. The park supports coastal wildlife and turtle nesting grounds in the marine reserves. During your 3 night stay in the Hluhluwe region you can enjoy days trips to the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Game Reserve, Lake St Lucia, Cape Vidal, Kosi Bay or visit a Zulu cultural village to learn more of the history and culture of the indigenous Zulu people.
Day 11–13
Another 3 hour drive, this time down the coast, will bring you to Shaka’s Rock, a popular and relaxed coastal town. After the activities further north spend a few days relaxing on the beach, swimming or enjoying the nearby restaurants.
Day 14
Drop your car at nearby Durban airport in time for your overnight flight to Heathrow, via Johannesburg, with South African Airways.
